There is something deeply connecting about standing in the place where your family story began. For a moment, heaven feels thinly veiled, and the centuries between you feel close enough to touch.

An old record becomes a real town, with streets you can walk and landscapes you can see. A photograph becomes a face, a life, and a connection you can share with the generations beside you. A family story becomes something tangible to pass on to your children.

As Seneca wrote, "we inherit from our ancestors the gifts which have spent centuries in the making."

That is why I created Ancestra: to help families experience Denmark through the places, stories, and traditions that shaped them.

I was born in Denmark and grew up in the United States with Danish culture as part of everyday family life. My mother is Danish, and I returned to Denmark often throughout my childhood, immersed in the traditions, food, places, and rhythms that shaped my connection to the country.

I later lived in Denmark for 18 months and have continued returning with my husband, children, friends, and extended family. Over the years, I’ve experienced Denmark not as a visitor, but as someone returning home, bringing different generations and perspectives with me.

I understand how difficult it can be to turn years of family-history research into a seamless journey that works for an entire family. It is not always easy to know which places and experiences will be worth the time once you are there, especially when you are planning from photographs, records, and travel blogs.
